Arnold Schwarzenegger Bodybuilding
Arnold Schwarzenegger elevated bodybuilding
to popular consciousness in the 1970s with his film
"Pumping Iron" His life story and how he transformed his
physique added a warm and inspirational message that made
the sport compelling to a larger audience. The California
governor until today remains one of the best known
ambassador to the sport of
bodybuilding.
Arnold Schwarzenegger was less
than hundred pounds when he first became interested in
bodybuilding. His commitment to the sport enabled him to
transform his physique to become the winner of the Mr. Universe
contest.

His story is compelling
because of its realness. He was not a rich kid who had all the
time and money to become good in his sport. Like anyone of us,
he had to work several jobs. At one time, California's
governor, even worked as a street cleaner is Santa Monica.
However, despite working long hours in several jobs, his
resolve to work on building his body never weakened. And in
1970, his time and effort was rewarded when he dominated the
Mr. Universe competition in 1970 and made himself a
celebrity.
He focused on his bodybuilding
until he felt it was time to set another goal. His next dream
was to become a great actor. This was a tough goal even for a
Mr. Universe, because a successful film career is not
guaranteed to anyone, no matter how popular you are in another
field. Just ask Madonna or Mariah Carey. And again, his hard
work paid off, and he became a box office success with films
like, “The Terminator” and “True Lies”. He also earned the
respect of the moviegoers and his peers in the industry, even
though he never won an acting award.
But let's go back to
bodybuilding. How did Arnold Schwarzenegger get into
bodybuilding? The idea did not just dawn on him. Like what
other people do when they want to find the right profession for
themselves, Arnold went out and tried several sports. Among the
sports he tried were soccer, boxing, weight lifting, and even
javelin throwing. He learned what best suited him through
experimentation. He learned that he did not experience
fulfillment in team sports, so he tried individual sports. And
when a coach recommended bodybuilding to make his legs bigger,
Arnold found the idea appealing.
As he recounted his story, he
mentioned how impressed he was when entered a bodybuilding gym
and noticed the muscles in people's bodies in which he cannot
even name. He viewed bodybuilding as an athletically superior
and beautiful sport. And at 16, there was no doubt in his mind
that this was the sport for him. This skinny boy eventually
held the Mr. Olympia title for seven years.
As his body grew, he noticed
his self-confidence growing as well. He recognized that his
‘physical power' fundamentally changed how the world treated
him. He noted the respect accorded to him by his peers and the
special attraction that women had for him. He also noted that
there were some women who were repelled by his body size, but
he handled these reactions with a good sense of humor. Instead
of letting these people make him feel inadequate, he made
himself bigger to annoy them.
Until today, Arnold
Schwarzenegger remains a bodybuilding hero. He teaches us how
to respect the sport of bodybuilding and appreciate the changes
it can bring to our lives.
